MV writes: I am unable to access lists in Yahoo mail. I use Windows XP, IE8/Fire fox browser. In fact in the Contacts I am not even getting 'Add List'
MV, Internet Explorer 8 is not supported by Yahoo Mail and will not display properly. For Firefox, you'll need to have at least version 19 or above and for Google Chrome, version 25 or above. The big problem here, is that it is not safe for you to access the Internet with a Windows XP computer, especially running IE8. Security support for Windows XP ended in April 2014. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Russ from Chambers, NE writes: Our tech guy says Internet Explorer is much safer and better to use than Firefox or Chrome. Is this true? I like using Firefox and Chrome for Google. He says not to. What do you say?
First of all, if your tech support guy at work says that he is most comfortable with Internet Explorer and that's what he wants you to use at work, do what he says. After all, he's going to do a much better job troubleshooting something he is comfortable with and it's possible that Internet Explorer works better with the particular systems you use on the job. My #1 steadfast rule when it comes to a work environment is that you obey the IT guy/gal. (Unless that person says it's okay to still run Windows XP.) It's his/her party. I have heard IT people express security concerns about Chrome before and the browser had a rough start of it with security issues, but most of that seems to be under control.
There was a time when Internet Explorer was considered to be the least secure browser, but with recent updates and the demise of IE 8, security is much improved for IE 11. The next statement will probably anger a few people since folks tend to be very defensive about their favorite browser. They are all good browsers. As long as you have the appropriate Internet Security for your PC and make sure you keep these browsers up-to-date with any security patches, Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer should all work perfectly well for you. This statement does not apply to Internet Explorer 8. It is no longer supported by Microsoft and is definitely not safe to use under any circumstance. You'll find security issues with any browser. I looked around for browser security tests and was able to find cases where each of these browsers was declared safest and times when they were each named the least secure. Use common sense about the sites you visit and the things you download combined with an anti-virus and malware protection and you should be okay with any of these. I actually suggest having all three browsers on your PC. Because at one time or another you are going to come across something that just won't work in a particular browser or they'll be an update and the browser will suddenly not work with a site you want to visit. My suggestion, use what you like at home. At work, follow the lead of the IT guy. Now, if security is a top concern with your browsing, check out this article from last summer about the 5 most secure browsers. You'll notice none of the big 3 browsers made the cut. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Nancy from Michigan writes: I bought a 16G tablet for my son and one for my husband, for Christmas. They both run Android KitKat 4.4. I was told this is the latest version of Android, is that true? I've been using MS for years and know nothing about Android. Will they be able to update these tablets, please? Thanks for your time. Nancy KitKat will be the most current operating system available for most tablets right now. Android 5.0 Lollipop is available on Nexus 9 tablets and some Android phones have the update, while others will get it later in 2015. As far as your tablets, it's going to depend on the manufacturer. Android differs from an iPad or Windows device.. When a new update comes out, it's available for everyone to upgrade at the same time (assuming their tablet meets the hardware requirements for the update.) Each Android device is just a little bit different. The update must be customized for the tablet by the manufacturer. To check for an update, you'll need to go to Settings. That's usually an icon that looks like a gear, but it depends on the device.
Find "About Device."
Look for Software updates. If an upgrade to Lollipop is available you'll find... Want more? Head on over to WorldStart!
Pick Your Flavor Of Ubuntu As we've discussed in previous artilces, Ubuntu is regarded as fast, reliable, secure and best of all, free, operating system. This Linux- based system can keep your computer alive when other operating systems pull support. There are several Ubuntu distributions or "flavors" especially designed to meet users' needs. Although their main core is still Ubuntu, the interface, themes and system requirements are quite different. Why? Because they use different desktop environments.
So, what is a desktop environment? Let's put it like this: yesterday you've seen a beautiful woman wearing a long red dress. Today, you see her again, but now she's wearing a short white skirt and a green blouse. Is the same woman, but her look is different. The same is with desktop environments. The core remains the same, only "the makeup" is different. I like Ubuntu, but I'm not sure what flavor to choose. Well, read on and you'll make up your mind! First, a quick review of Ubuntu based derivatives.
As you can see, each distribution is designed for a certain purpose. Keep in mind that, no matter which one you choose, you may still enjoy the same applications . It's as simple as opening the Ubuntu Software Center and installing them. Now, let's take a closer look on those flavors. Go to WorldStart to learn more!
Anni from Texas asks: HELP I need an Internet security I think???? I have AVG suite .The Microsoft tech. told me so. ONLY I don't know one to get. Any suggestions ???? And where to "get" it. Anni, you definitely need Internet security of some type. And if you have your AVG suite up-to-date, you already have some security. You'll also want an anti-malware program like Malwarebytes. Your Windows computer should already have the option of activating Windows Defender, which you could pair with Malwarebytes. To turn Windows Defender on, type Defender in the search box of your Start Menu or Search Charm and click on the results.
Select Tools and then Options.
Click Administrator and then check the box next to Use this program... Want more? Go to WorldStart! For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
Story Of The Web If you're on any kind of social media, you've probably seen your year in review video (I know I've gotten one on Facebook, Google Plus, and I've seen them going around on Instagram too) and it got me thinking if I could find a site that was like that but showcasing the history and milestones of the internet. Why? You may ask, well this year marks the 25th anniversary of the web and in that time it's gone from people asking what the heck it was to being a ubiquitous part of everyday life. The site offers you two ways to navigate. You can select to let it auto-play or you an take control and scroll down through the exhibits that way. I chose to let it auto-play, and found that to be a very enjoyable way of exploring the site. You'll start back in 1989 and work your way through to the present day. It was very nostalgic for me to watch and remember when I started using the internet, and all the different milestones I was a participant in over the years.
