Hillary Clinton's E-mail Mistake

Former First Lady, Secretary of State, senator and possible future Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton broke the cardinal rule about keeping your business e-mail separate from your private account.

It turns out that during her time as Secretary of State, she exclusively used a personal e-mail account to conduct official business instead of using the official government e-mail account. The move is against the rules and may be a violation of federal laws.

Her staff said that her e-mails were properly preserved, but the requirement that e-mails be maintained on government server are meant to provide security for the records and access to the information should the government need it.

Most businesses and agencies require employees to conduct official business on official accounts.

Have you ever used a personal e-mail account for business? Should that be illegal for government employees? Tell us what you think by clicking here.

Runcible Aims To Create Heirloom Smartphone

A company called Monhom wants to turn electronics into heirloom pieces passed down the way pocket watches are handed down. The device is called Runcible and the makers promise a fully functional smartphone that is also a high-end piece. While this may also be the goal of the iWatch, the Runcible looks more like what we envision as a family heirloom. It's rounded and crafted from luxury woods.

The device is designed so that that electronics will be replaceable, so that it can be hopefully be upgraded for future generations. If a round, wood phone seems like a device you might enjoy, you can head over to their website to be notified when the device is made available for sale. No pricing is available yet.

Microsoft Adds Wireless PC Adapter For Xbox Controllers

Microsoft has a new wireless adapter for Xbox One controllers and that means the device can be used on Windows computer. This could be crucial to the goal of having cross platform compatibility between the Xbox One gaming system and Windows 10.

xboxoncrop

The new Windows 10 OS comes with a built-in game DVR and users should be able to stream many XBox One games to their Windows 10 tablet or PC. The company also opened up the Xbox One platform to app developers to come up with games that can be played across all Windows devices.

iTunes Outage

Users of iPhones and iPads found themselves unable to access iTunes and the App Store for a 12 hour period on Wednesday. The outage started around 5 a.m. and continued until after 4 p.m. Customers in the U.S., U.K. as well as Spain and Switzerland couldn't get to apps or update them.

Apple says the issue was an internal DNS error at Apple. Also affected were iCloud and the Mac App Store.

Were you affected by the Apple outage? Is the HIllary e-mail outrage much ado about nothing? Let us know what you think by clicking here to comment.

LibreOffice - Six Fantastic Free Programs To Try

In part 1 of this article, I told you how to find LibreOffice – a great free alternative to Microsoft Office. Libre Office works across multiple platforms and it's even portable!

Let's take a look at the programs that come with the suite.

Writer. Is the equivalent to Microsoft Word equivalent. When you click on the icon, you will open a window that looks quite familiar. Notice the toolbar – looks pretty much the same with Word's toolbar, doesn't it?

write_toolbar

The menu bar and the buttons don't look so different from Word. You can quickly format the text or add bulleting and indentation. Also, you can check spelling and grammar, find a word, insert a table or a chart, shapes and so on.

Calc. Excel is not the king anymore. With Calc you can quickly use your already saved worksheets or create new ones.

calc_toolbar

As with Excel, you can perform calculations, format the text, merge or split the cells, increase or decrease decimals, insert formulas and everything you can do with Microsoft's Excel application.

Impress. What can PowerPoint do that Impress can't? Nothing.

impress_window

Impress lets you insert titles, slides, shapes, images, videos, sounds – everything you need for a powerful, eye-catching presentation.

Draw. This is so much more than an alternative to Microsoft's Paint. It does a lot more than that simple program.

draw_window

You can quickly insert shapes, text, arrows, splines and more. You can even insert other images and charts, apply 3D effects and format line, text and shapes styles.

Math. I must say that I'm impressed with this application. I'm sure it is every mathematician's dream to work with it.

math_window

On the left side you have a quick picker of the most common operations, while on the right side you can choose the most used elements.

Base. The power of a strong database is unleashed with this application. Not only does it support all the formats supported by Microsoft's Access, it even helps you to build a database from scratch, right from the moment you click the launcher.

base_main_screen

The wizard guides you step by step through the whole process. At the end, you will have a ready to go database.

The best part comes next: all LibreOffice's inside applications gives you the opportunity to save your work directly in .pdf format, with just one click.

In future articles I will teach you how to work with every single one of them.

On The Move

Galaxy S6 Ditches Two Popular Features

Some Android users probably won't be happy with the new Galaxy S6 phone. The new offering is nice to look at, but it's dropping two favorite features of Galaxy users. The back will no longer be removable. Samsung had previously used the lack of a removable back to attack iPhones, but it looks as if times have changed.

gs6

That means you can't replace the battery. That also means there's no more expandable storage.

gs6flat

The phones will come with a baseline of 32GB of storage and options to buy models with 64GB and 128GB of storage. Of course, you can always use cloud storage, but if you're like me, I like to have my songs actually downloaded onto my phone and not eat up my data plan with streaming.

Straw Poll

If you're unfamiliar with the term, a straw poll is an unofficial vote to generate a quick indication of a general feeling or trend among a populace.

I first encountered this poll creator during the Geek and Sundry Twitch.tv charity drive to raise money for Lupus. They used the site to create polls to quick gauge what content their viewers wanted to see during the charity drive.

After watching a few more Twitch.tv streams, I kept seeing it pop up, so I decided to go check it out more thoroughly and I'm so happy to be able to share it with you.

This is a great way to generate a quick Straw poll to decide where to eat, what activity you want to do, or just about anything because you have control over what the options are.

It's really easy to use. You'll load in to a blank poll, and all you have to do is type to create it. As you enter options more slots for options will appear.

At a school or business? Then you'll want to check the Permissive Vote Duplication checking, so that it can generate votes from 1 location.

Want to check out what a poll looks like? Well click here and see the poll I made.

In order to vote, you'll click on the option you pick and then click the Vote button. Then it will display the votes in a real time pie chart, so you can keep track of how the votes are stacking up.

Go check it out for yourself today!

Mosquito Beach Stormy Rainbows

I recently reprocessed this image. I've learned a lot since my first attempt with it, and I think this is a much more realistic rendering of the scene.

It was taken one cold, rainy morning in Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore along Lake Superior – Mosquito Beach to be exact.…(More)

Water Skiing Pelican

Grizzly Cub

I came across this guy and his mother while out searching for a large male griz I'd spotted the day before. This, umm, "little" guy and his mom were actually strolling right along the roadside and blended in with the trees remarkably well. I was lucky there was a group of cars stopped or I might have driven right past them! Upon spotting them, I pulled over and yanked the gear out of the back – hoping my 600mm lens wasn't going to be too much – I was literally shooting from right across the road. Although you might expect...(More)
