Quick Tip

Monica writes:

I have a Dell computer with Microsoft. Vista. Every time I log in, a warning comes from the system that says D: is full and running out of space. all that is on there is recovery. what can be done ? what is the problem? I did try to get into the system recovery, but it cautions that adm password is needed.

Monica, most likely you have accidentally saved other files to your recovery drive. Nothing should be saved on that drive except the recover. It's not an uncommon problem, in fact we addressed the question last fall. Click here to read the full article on how to solve the issue.

If you are the only user of the computer, the admin password should be the password for your user account.

The biggest misconception in the audio world: earbuds are just earbuds.

"They all sound the same, right?"

That couldn't be further from the truth! The earbud world is FULL of low-quality, crummy audio pieces of junk. But there's also some solid mid-range models. And then, of course, you have your high-quality audio that you won't even believe comes from those tiny earbud speakers!

Firstly, you're getting some seriously bad audio.

You already knew that though, didn't you? When you listen to your smartphone or MP3 player with your current earbuds, it sounds so much different than being at a computer or TV with proper speakers.

It's because the cheap drivers in those earbuds simply CAN'T produce quality audio. They don't make them for you to enjoy - they make them because they're just sliiiightly better than the built-in speakers on your device.

Bass sounds empty. The treble isn't clear. Everything just sounds off.

Earbuds don't HAVE to sound bad - you've just been using the wrong earbuds! Designed for ANY audio, from jazzy tunes to over-the-top action movies, you'll be able to listen to ANYTHING on any device without wondering why it sounds like you're sitting in a metal trash can!

Let me tell ya - once you pop these babies in your ears you'll never, ever, go back to the cheap earbuds!

It's like the difference between B&W TV and HD TV!

I kid you not - the first time I tried these I was FLOORED!

I thought they'd sound a little better than my other earbuds but I was totally unprepared for the richness and clarity of sound I was hearing!

Oh, just wait till you feel how comfortable these are!

EASILY the most comfortable earbuds you'll ever experience!

The silicone tips BLOW AWAY the typical plastic pieces most earbuds have you stick in your ears. I mean, come on, who wants to shove plastic right in their ears?!

These are comfy and a little squishy so when you put them in your ears they can squeeze in and gently fit. Plastic ones will rub your ears raw and that's why they start to hurt after a bit - but not these!

And this actually gets BETTER...

No neighbor dogs barking or cars honking or kids screaming.

Just you and your audio.

You're gonna ABSOLUTELY LOVE these earbuds... assuming you're one of the lucky ones that can get your hands on them.

I've got a good number of these ready to go, but when you see the price, you'll understand why you need to act REALLY quick on them:

THEY'RE ONLY $0.97!!!

Head to the store ASAP, you WILL miss out if you wait.

The sale ends Thursday - assuming there are any left for it to even last that long!

Computers 101

Patricia from Bull Shoals asks:

Why do my desktop shortcuts keep locking up and will not open? I have to restart. I run Windows 7 on HP model p7-1020.

Patricia, we can't be sure why our desktop shortcuts keep locking up. It's not an uncommon issue in Windows 7 and usually if you reboot the computer, the shortcuts become clickable again, however the issue will start all over again in a few days.

The cause could be a third party program. Some have reported issues due to their security software others say it is linked to using Internet Explorer, but there doesn't seem to be a single answer as to what's behind the problem. I do have a couple of solutions to try.

First, you could try Mcrosoft's FixIt for broken desktop shortcuts. Click here to run that program.

fixit

It is designed to help with broken Desktop icons and Startup items that don't work. It can also repair disk volume errors. When you click on it, you'll be given the option to save the file.

savefixit

It will be downloaded to your downloads file. You can type downloads in your search menu to find the downloads file. Double-click download to launch the program.

fixitdownload

If that doesn't help, there may be an issue with your account settings. To test out if that's the problem, you'll need to create another user account for Windows. Type Add or Remove Users in the search window of your Start Menu and click on the results.

addorremoveuser

Select Create new account.

createnewaccount

Choose a name for the account and decide whether you want it to have Administrator or Standard privileges.

chooseaccountname

You can then log onto your computer using the new account and see if the issue when your shortcuts keeps happening. If it clears up, the problem would likely be that your user account somehow became corrupted.

I hope one of these solutions helps.

Sling TV Adds More Channels

Sling TV, the service that offers cable channels without a cable or satellite subscription is adding even more channels to the line-up, making it a viable alternative for those looking to cut the cord.

slingcrop

The service allows you to watch these channels from a streaming box, PC or tablet app. You can learn the basics by clicking here.

Now the service is adding AMC and IFC to its initial lineup giving you 16 basic channels for $20 a month. That means fans of popular shows like The Walking Dead and Mad Men who say goodbye to cable, will still be able to watch those shows at the same time as their friends with cable and not on a delayed basis. But that also means you have to watch commercials.

The service is also adding an additional tier featuring four EPIX channels and Sundance TV for an additional $5 per month.

If you are used to the functionality of a DVR, you may not like the...

Why Businesses Are Switching To Subscription Software Services

It's called SaaS (Software as a Service) and means that more and companies are moving away from the traditional model of buying and installing software as a one-time purchase to the idea of software as a subscription service.

Some examples of this for the home user are Microsoft's Office 365 at $99 per year or Adobe's Creative Cloud at $49 per month. But the place you'll really see this concept exploding is for businesses.

In 2013, the IT research firm Gartner projected that software as a service (SaaS) would experience a compound annual growth rate of 19.5 percent through the year 2016. Business expenditures on SaaS are expected to reach $32.8 billion worldwide by 2016, up from $13.5 billion in 2011, according to the firm. SaaS not only saves companies time and money, but it streamlines processes and reduces the amount of resources needed to accomplish a given task. SaaS providers are adapting to the increased demand for their products, while companies continue to incorporate new platforms and technologies as they become available...

Heidemarie asks,

I have some computer problems, my home page msn.com when I click on outlook for my email the page gets redirected and comes up with all kinds of ads. The ads say Desktop Temperature Monitor. I ran my Windows Defender and it shows nothing, also a temperature icon popped up on my taskbar. It tells me the Las Vegas temperature. Anything I do I keep getting popups. Please help.

Hi Heidemarie,

Desktop Temperature Monitor is adware/malware that was added, likely along with some other free program you purposely installed. Windows Defender might not have found it because it's a malware program, rather than a virus.

First, you want to go to your Control Panel and remove the program from your list of programs. Look for the name Desktop Temperature Monitor, or something similar. You may want to sort by Installed date to check for other unwanted programs that may be installed at about the same time by clicking on the Installed On at the top of the columns.

installed

Then, download AdwCleaner, a highly recommended program to remove Adware and browser hijacks from your computer. Install the program and run a scan. When it's finished with the scan, click on the Clean button to remove any files found. (You may want to browse through the tabs, as there could potentially be programs it finds that you do want, such as ad blockers. If so, uncheck those before hitting Clean.) The program will close all open programs, as well as...

Converse Rubber Tracks Sample Library

This site is an awesome music resource! I'm so happy to be able to share it with all of you.

The Converse Rubber Tracks Sample Library offers you an entire library of free audio samples that you can use to your heart's content. When I arrived at the site there was a Learn More video to watch and then it opened up the rest of the site.

If that is not your experience when you arrive (it didn't load that way in IE for me) you can check out that video by visiting the About page.

Check out the FAQ to get any of your questions answered. There's a selection of general (like what is sampling?) to more technically specific questions.

While the main attraction of the site is the Samples section, be sure to check out the Mixes section where you'll find mixes that were created with samples offered on the site.

I recently reprocessed this image. I've learned a lot since my first attempt with it, and I think this is a much more realistic rendering of the scene.

Water Skiing Pelican

Grizzly Cub

I came across this guy and his mother while out searching for a large male griz I'd spotted the day before. This, umm, "little" guy and his mom were actually strolling right along the roadside and blended in with the trees remarkably well. I was lucky there was a group of cars stopped or I might have driven right past them! Upon spotting them, I pulled over and yanked the gear out of the back – hoping my 600mm lens wasn't going to be too much – I was literally shooting from right across the road. Although you might expect...(More)
